1. Introduction

24U Appearance OSAX is a Scripting Addition. It extends AppleScript™ by a few very easy-to-use commands to post notifications, display enhanced Appearance alerts, floating message windows, floating progress indicators, and even better dialogs.

   

2. System requirements

Recommended configuration:

  - Any Power Macintosh G4, PowerBook, iMac, or iBook
  - Mac OS X 10.3.9 or newer
 

Minimum requirements:

  - Macintosh with G3 or better processor
  - Mac OS X 10.3

 

3. Installation

To install 24U Appearance OSAX, follow these easy steps:

1. If you did not do this yet, download and expand the 24U Appearance OSAX archive and open the dmg file.
   
2. Open the mounted volume 24U Appearance OSAX 3.1.
   
3. Double-click the installer package "Install Appearance OSAX" and follow the instructions.

4. Quick Start

24U Appearance OSAX is designed to be very easy to use. The best way to understand what it can do is to go through the included sample scripts. Simply open the scripts in your favorite script editor, and follow the inline instructions to customize the code and test how your changes affect the scripts' behavior.
 

5. Troubleshooting

Before you contact our technical support regarding problems or difficulties using 24U Appearance OSAX, please check if your issue is not listed below:

I cannot close a floating window
To close a floating window, use the appropriate close command i.e. close progress indicator *, where * is the reference returned from the corresponding create function. If you lost (or don't know) the reference, you may use the close command with all windows constant. This will close all windows owned by current application. If you want to close all 24U Appearance OSAX windows globally, run the "Close all windows globally" applet.

I cannot post notification more than once
You probably don't remove the previously posted notification. A new notification cannot be posted until the previous one is removed with the "remove notification" command.

I can display a "better" dialog but I don't know how to get data from it?
There is a sample script called "display better dialog" in the "Sample Scripts" folder. Open the script in the Script Editor, and you'll see couple of examples on how to gather data from different kinds of dialogs.

When I save the output to a file, it contains an invisible character before each normal character.
The results of Appearance OSAX's commands are encoded with standard UTF-16 Unicode encoding. It means that each character is represented by two bytes. When you then save the result as a plain text file, the editor which is opening the file doesn't know which encoding to use unless you specify the encoding during opening.

I bought a developer licence, but it doesn't work.
Developer licenses works only for applications with 24 Appearance OSAX bundled into. Use 24U OSAX Bundler Lite distributed together with 24U appearance OSAX and bundle OSAX into your application.

I saved my script as an application on my Intel based Mac and it doesn't work correctly.
24U Appearance OSAX is distributed as a universal binary, but ApplesSript application automaticaly calls the PPC code unless saved as "application bundle". If you save your script as an application bundle, it will work correctly.

6. Shareware Notice

Please note that 24U Appearance OSAX is SHAREWARE. That means it is not free and you have to pay a license fee if you want to keep it. You can install 24U Appearance OSAX and try it out for the period of 14 days. After this period, 24U Appearance OSAX can stop working and require a registration code. You will get your registration code after you pay for your license.

You can freely distribute 24U Appearance OSAX as long as you distribute the original compacted archive untouched and you don't charge money for the distribution. If you want to distribute 24U Appearance OSAX on a physical medium, such as CD-ROM, or if you want to distribute it in other form than the original compacted archive, you must ask for our permission. If you are a solution developer you can also bundle 24U Appearance OSAX with your products and sublicense it to your customers, provided you have purchased a developer license.
